This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for August 19, 2007:
Like the other respondent whose plans were written in flowing water with a stick, my life is filled with coincidences.
One of the more significant ones happened while I was working as college paper photographer on a series of headshots to accompany an article some guy was writing. None of the people on the shot list I had been given had been interviewed, but people they suggested might have been, had been. So I'm chasing about trying figure out who this guy's been interviewing.
I get irritated after the first few and give the guy a call, He understands and agrees to meet me for the next interview so that we can coordinate. I show up, the person hasn't been interviewed. I wait. It's Friday on campus and in those days, most classes were Monday to Thursday. About twenty minutes go by. No one. I give up, irritated again.
I'm walking out of the building as a guy in a camel-colored corduroy jacket is walking in.
I am so angry I figure --- if this is not the guy, I'd rather not show a rude side to a stranger -- I'll just cool off and reschedule.
Sometime over the next few days, I can't seem to connect with the guy, and leave voicemail.
Then I go to a music performance on campus, and voila--- Mr Corduroy Jacket is chatting with people and making an unfavorable comment about Canada. I happen to resemble that remark, so out of curiosity, I join the conversation.
And, indeed, Corduroy Guy is the interviewer. We started talking that night and actually haven't stopped. There was about a 10 year (if you count the magnetic break-ups) relationship, followed by an even longer friendship.
As coincidences go, that one was fun.
Because of Corduroy Guy, I wound up staying in the US, and becoming a citizen. Otherwise, I would probably have gone for my master's degree in Canada. Funny how my choice of that photo assignment made such a big difference in my life.
